Turbines and Rhubarb Crumble!

Last Friday we had an Outing! Sadly Alfie couldn't come with us because we firstly went to visit friends on a farm, and they have dogs and horses and sheep and chickens and cats (remember Wally?) and Alfie would have been a little overwhelmed by it all! So we set off early to be with our friends in time for tea! Our route took us past the tiny town of Hopefield and between the two fields of wind turbines.

Completed and working!

Begun in June 2012, we have watched these being built, counting the completed ones  each time we drove past, which wasn't often! The pieces were shipped to Saldanha, being the nearest port to Hopefield, and from there they were taken by road on the back of enormous lorries. We saw several of them when we were heading off with Gemsquash, and very often there was no room to pass them until they pulled off the road for a quick break.

Not very clear, it had been raining but you can see the size of the lorries!

All 37 are now complete and turning lazily in the wind, (well, it looks lazy) with each one generating 1,8 MW. Altogether they produce 66 MW which is enough to power 70 000 low income homes, or 29 000 medium income homes. I wish I had one in the garden!

In the beginning............

After a welcome cup of coffee and a slice of rhubarb crumble (I haven't had rhubarb since I was a child and it brought back so many memories), we set off to the town of Atlantis. There was a motorhome show at the factory and we thought that it would be a great place to have a wander and climb in and out of a variety of motor homes to make us jealous! We were wrong! There were maybe half a dozen there, with their owners who were wanting to sell them, ranging from modern to very old ( the motorhomes too!). Our favourite was an old 1960 Combi, complete with an upright steering wheel and a red and white striped tent that contained a...............................toilet! I expected to see a man down a hole, it was that type of tent!

So we decided to come home.

Had we been missed? Yes, Alfie was very pleased to see us. And Basil?

Oh, no Tom and Jerry!

He just wanted to know what was on the TV!!!
